Amid the tenement buildings of Little Italy, the spectacular Baroque-revival-style Police Building at 240 Centre Street was designed in 1909 to be the headquarters of the city's police department. In 1973, the city opened a new department headquarters to the east of the Municipal Building, and 240 Center Street fell into limbo after many years of neglect.
